1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4
Here’s another high school dream car… Definitely one of the alpha dogs back in the early 90s, the 3000GT and it’s twin Dodge Stealth were among the best performance bargains of the day.
Of course, everyone knows there’s no replacement for displacement… unless of course you have not one, but two turbochargers. Competing in theory against the Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro, the 276 horsepower twin turbo V6 made a mockery of the 5.0 V8 Mustang’s output of 205 and was more than 30 more than the Camaro’s 5.7 liter V8 peak at 245.
Released to the public in ’91, the Stealth/3000GT twins enjoyed a five-year run before the Stealth was killed off. The 3000GT soldiered on alone until 2001, unfortunately not enjoying much in the way of improvement along the way.
In the meantime, the Mustang and Camaro were revamped and injected with some serious power. Even by the early part of the new millennium, the horsepower wars were heating up with sedans such as the Nissan Maxima putting 255 horses to the road via high-tech V6 engines with variable valve timing and other goodies.
With it’s long-in-the-tooth design and aging powerplant, the 3000GT was simply left behind.
These days, most high performance vehicles are rotting away in a junkyard, having been driven hard and driven into a ditch wet. Fortunately, some people are a little more careful – this particular example being the fruit of such labor.
This ’91 VR-4 twin-turbo model has fewer than 70,000 pampered miles on it. And… it’s a stick shift. Oh happy day!
As you can see, it’s in great shape on the outside and the true “cockpit” inside.
The red paint looks flawless and the photographs on the ebay auction page are even more detailed. The seller has taken great pains to show off this ride. Inside, black leather seats look like a great place to spend a few hours and are also in very nice condition.
Of course, there is that engine. Perhaps even more impressive than it’s output is the way it was shoehorned into the engine bay. I would hate to ever have to service it, but that is an impressive nest of hoses and wires right there. Again, the seller has done a great job of presentation – you could definitely eat off of it given that there is so little space for food to drop in to anything – oh, and it’s really clean.
Get it now on ebay – it has a Buy-it-now price of $12,800 which sounds like a pretty good deal for a near-exotic bright red sports car with a primo leather interior.
