1990 Dodge Daytona
In high school, I knew a guy who drove a Dodge Daytona. He claimed it was the fastest car on the road. He was wrong. His was a base model with an automatic – it was slow. Of course, he also claimed that the subsequent Hyundai Excel he bought was even faster.
He was probably right about that.
Here we have a Daytona that is actually pretty quick. This rare turbo version competed successfully with the Ford Probe GTs and Mitsubushi Eclipse/Diamond Star trio in the early 90s – and even nipped at the heels of the fairly pedestrian (at the time) Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro crowd.
Based on the long-in-the-tooth K-car platform, the Daytona evolved from a sporty economy coupe to a fairly capable performer in its latter years. Unfortunately those latter years looked pretty much the same as when the car was introduced – the angular lines and high cowl changed little over the life of the model.
This particular example has had some modifications and appears to be in pretty decent shape. Whether or not it is worth the over-$5000 entry fee will be up to the market to determine. In any case, I can pretty much guarantee you won’t see many like it around.
